The Deep Ones are humanoid fish creatures who worship Cthulhu and other Great Old Ones.
In those prehistoric days, Cthulhu communicated with humans telepathically, and led them to ancient temples and sites where the humans found statues and artwork from other worlds.
Despite his notoriety, Cthulhu is not the most powerful of the deities nor is he the theological center of the mythos. Instead, this position is held by the demon-god Azathoth, an Outer God, ruling from his cosmically-centered court.
One day, “when the stars are right”, R’lyeh will rise from beneath the sea, and Cthulhu will awaken and wreak havoc on the earth.
The most well-known of these beings is Cthulhu, who currently lies “dead [but] dreaming” in the submerged city of R’lyeh somewhere in the Southeast Pacific Ocean.
They are presently quiescent, having fallen into a death-like sleep at some time in the distant past
The Cthulhu mythos is centered on the Great Old Ones, a fearsome assortment of ancient, powerful deities that once ruled the Earth.
Later peace was made, and the new lands were given to the Cthulhu spawn whilst the Old Ones held the sea and the older lands
Another race–a land race of beings shaped like octopi and probably corresponding to the fabulous pre-human spawn of Cthulhu–soon began filtering down from cosmic infinity and precipitated a monstrous war which for a time drove the Old Ones wholly back to the sea
They all lay in stone houses in Their great city of R’lyeh, preserved by the spells of mighty Cthulhu for a glorious resurrection when the stars and the earth might once more be ready for Them.
HP Lovecraft began experiencing the parasomnia ‘night terrors’ from the age of six.
Night terrors cause the sufferer to physically move or scream to escape waking dreams, and are estimated to affect 3% of adults.
When Lovecraft was 3 his father went insane and died 5 years later, most likely from “general paresis of the insane.”
Two microorganisms that assist in the digestion of wood by termites have been named after Cthulhu and Cthulhu’s “daughter” Cthylla: Cthulhu macrofasciculumque and Cthylla microfasciculumque, respectively.
The Californian spider species Pimoa cthulhu, described by Gustavo Hormiga in 1994, is named with reference to Cthulhu.
